Protecting Tenants From Rent Hikes

In August 2014, more than 50 low and moderate-income families living at 812 Jefferson Street in DC's Brightwood neighborhood feared they would be forced from their homes. Their landlord had just filed a hardship petition to be exempt from rent control and raise their rent by 18%. Many residents would have been unable to afford to stay. But together with our affordable housing organizers, tenants came together to defend their homes.

Soon, after filing a hardship petition, the building's owner decided to sell the building, and tenants were able to exercise their rights under the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act and partner with UrbanMatters an affordable housing developer, to preserve the affordability of their homes.

We are happy to share that in November of 2015, after a lengthy application process, DC's Department of Housing and Community Development approved funding for the acquisition of the property and for desperately-needed renovations.
